Student Spotlight – Manuel McGrinson

Weiner Sensei: What led you to Aikido?

Manuel-san: I think my main draw to Aikido was its wholistic approach to martial arts. While Aikido is an effective self-defense tool, the artistry and philosophy that accompanied it, set it apart. My appreciation for Samurai principles and Japanese culture might have had something to do with it as well.

Weiner Sensei:  How would you describe class at our dojo?

Manuel-san: Aikido of Charlotte is probably as close as it gets to training Aikido in Japan. Proper etiquette is first and foremost; From how we bow when we enter the dojo, to addressing everyone with the respectful ‘san’ title, to the spirit of excellence that is evident by the dojo itself, the website, the training, etc. Best of all they know how to have fun and keep things light.

Weiner Sensei: What are your short term goals as a student?

Manuel-san: My two short term goals are 1) To learn the vocabulary of Aikido (6-1kyu). All of our techniques are described in Japanese terms, so I figured learning what each technique is will allow me to have a good foundation. 2) Focus on deeply learning the techniques for my next 2 tests.

Weiner Sensei:  What are your long term goals as a student?

Manuel-san: Shodan would probably be my first long term goal. Once I get there I will be better able to determine what my new long term goal should be. The good thing about Aikido is that its efficiency of motion allows you to practice it into your later years. Even then, If not physically, then mentally.
