Student Spotlight – Dan Lantos

Today, I’m speaking with Dan Lantos, 4th Kyu

Weiner Sensei: What led you to Aikido?

Dan-san: I had been interested in learning martial arts for many years; at age 37, I decided to stop delaying and sign up. I found that Aikido best matched my personality; I work in health care, and I like the idea of using skills to prevent harm rather than inflict it. .

Weiner Sensei:  How would you describe class at our dojo?

Dan-san: Students at Aikido of Charlotte are very quick to adopt our culture of cooperation. We learn by receiving techniques as well as by performing them, so we all have an interest in helping each other succeed. Class is relaxed, positive, and suited to each individual’s skill level.

Weiner Sensei: What are your short term goals as a student?

Dan-san: I’m trying to focus more on the “feel” of Aikido techniques, both as nage and as uke — thinking about proper position and balance rather than just trying to imitate movements and footwork. I’m not quite there, but I think it’s developing. I’d also love to get past my anxiety about breakfalls.

Weiner Sensei:  What are your long term goals as a student?

Dan-san: I hope to train more frequently as my kids get older and as my career evolves. I am interested in learning Japanese to help understand Aikido culture and terminology. I would love to study more about ki and Aikido-related philosophy. And keep training to advance to Shodan and beyond!

Rank Testing Bowing Reiho – Advanced Andy Demko Shihan likes to say, “The little things don’t mean a lot, they mean everything”.  Everyone who has practiced in our dojo or visited has seen that we take Reiho (Etiquette) pretty seriously.  In all that we do, practice.  Bowing.  Addressing each other & more.  I learned a…
